Frog
Maori name: pokopoko
New Zealand has 3 native species of frog, all critically endangered. They do not go through a tadpole stage. Instead the male frog looks after the eggs while the free swimming embyos develop. When the eggs hatch the tiny froglets crawl up on their father's back until fully developed. New Zealand also has Whistling frogs and Green Bell frogs introduced from Australia in the 19th century.
Fine quality pewter miniature mounted on South Island stone.
