Dracontias Dragons
New designs are under review.
Much of a dragon's magic can be accredited to the dracontias, a special crystal embedded in a dragon's forehead. Dracontias crystals were highly prized by medieval alchemists and apothecaries for their power to:
- heal illness
- protect against plague
- detect and cure poisoning
- make a house healthy and prosperous
In order to retain it's power a dracontias had to be removed from a living dragon (obviously a dangerous undertaking). The dragon died soon after but a piece of it's soul remained within the dracontias. This practice led to the near extinction of the dragon species until an unknown early conservationist discovered something mysterious. If natural gemstones were pressed into the still soft shell of newly laid dragon eggs, their latent energy was amplified by the prolonged close contact with the dragon's dracontias. Thus the crystal is empowered with the dracontais magic without endangering the life of the dragon.
